Let’s not even discuss it, I can’t find the words
You ask me why I trust him
He was there when the suddenlies came
When the billows started rolling
Right in the midst of my serenity
When the thunderstorm came unannounced
On my bright sun shiny day
When all was right with my world
And it suddenly tilted out of balance
Spinning me around like a puppet

I couldn’t figure out why
It didn’t make any sense
Have you had one of those suddenlies?
The kind no one understands
No one can help, Too gone too fast
Others have experienced it too
I have heard their stories
He only had a cold that won’t shift but the doctor said he was at stage four
And must prepare to die
She married the love of her life
The wedding was the talk of the town
And now she can’t have any babies
They were just passing by
They decided to help the lady
Now they are under fire. She said they are the culprits
They lost everything in one day

Have you ever had a suddenly
Which you couldn’t explain to no one
It is during such times
When the unthinkable happens
That we look for the friend
The one who sticks closer than a brother
I thought my end had come. I yelled and screamed in private
And smiled so bright in public
My heart was bleeding raw. I almost lost my mind

Can’t believe it happened to me. This nightmare I had to live with
I longed for some refuge. Anything to stop this terror from swallowing me whole
It’s easy to succumb to despair. When you are nearly half dead
Beaten down by a suddenly That you can’t even explain

The suddenlies don’t care who you are
Their waves will pull you under
The world will stand amazed. When they see the mess you are in
They will snigger and berate, Your excellencies of the past
Forgetting that those suddenlies Can visit any one they choose
But if like me you’ve come through
Rescued by the Lord
He was with me in the pit. Even when I didn’t know it
He pulled me out to safety And ordered my speedy recovery
How can I not trust in him
It is really not subject to debate
He flips it around for me. Bringing joy out of despair
Renewing my strength, Setting my feet on stable ground
Giving me Beauty for Ashes

You ask me how I know it’s him?
It is in the middle of the fire, when no one can help
That’s where he introduces himself
Wouldn’t have heard him any other way

Who refuses the strong hand of help
When no one else can help?
I know him so well now but He has always been here
Standing silently by
How can I not trust him
He has nothing to gain, I have everything to lose
He rules over the suddenlies, That makes other powers shake
And he turns it around for me
How can I not trust him?
He is King over the suddenlies
And I am safe with him

Welcome. Let’s get introductions out of the way. Don’t forget to tell me a bit about yourself too.

Authentic Dreams Don’t Die.

The first day of the week cometh Mary Magdalene early, when it was yet dark, unto the sepulchre, and seeth the stone taken away from the sepulchre. (John 20:1 KJV)

Lots of people are not particularly enthused about Mondays because it is the first day of the working week. Even if you love your job the fact that your weekend is over can sometimes be quite depressing but only if the weekend was a good one.

Some of us are busier at weekends than during the weekdays. After a very eventful weekend, the last thing I want to do is wake up early on a Monday morning. And even if I have to, the last place I will want to go to is to the cemetery or the grave where my dream is buried. Not only is it a creepy place to go to, I will not want to be reminded about where my loved one, my dream and what I thought was my future is buried. I mean what is the use of that? I will rather forget about it.

So after a gruelling weekend of seeing her Lord and master being tortured and killed, after being witness to his decimation, and hearing the previously adoring crowd shouting, ‘crucify him!’, after seeing his body being thorn and bruised beyond recognition, after seeing the miracle worker, great teacher, sent from above subjected to a common criminal’s death, an embarrassing one at that, witnessed by many and mocked by many: if I were Mary Magdalene, I will not be seen anywhere near his grave especially not on the first day of a new week.

So what made her go there? What made her go to the place where dead things are? It was a reluctance to let go. A faithfulness and loyalty that disappointment and disillusionment could not curtail. A refusal to give in to the final verdict. She will rather wake up early to sit by her dead dream than to live without one because she knew that this dream was different. It was not meant to die. If it did then there must be more to the story than what she had witnessed.

Sometimes, we do not wait to see the real ending of what seems dead to us. If you truly handled it and are a witness to its efficacy, and it’s authenticity then you will not give up on it even when it appears dead.

If you are true to yourself, you will know when something in your life is above-board, is beyond ordinary and needs holding onto no matter the decimation it has been subjected to.

I am yet to see anyone throw away a £50 note because it is dirty or crumbled or wet or even torn. You will wake up early, go back to the rubbish bin where it was dumped. You will retrieve it and clean it up, repair it and use it. Because you know beyond all doubts what it’s value is.

This Jesus, this faith, this Christian life is worth going back to the graveside for. It is worth retrieving. Yes people have brought reproach to the name of Christ. People have done horrible things in the name of religion, but this one, this Jesus, this Christianity, we have tasted of it, we have handled it and it is different. It is no ordinary faith. It is authentic. It is valuable and it’s worth standing in each dead place were it has been defamed and buried and holding on to it until the end.

So that bishop has even found to be gay. That church has mis-appropriated your money. That mighty man or woman of God got divorced. If your faith has been affected, I want to tell you that seemingly dead or alive, Jesus is worth holding on to.

You know how the story went for Mary Magdalene. She was the first to see the resurrected Lord. She was the first to see the ‘authentic’ rise again. Because she was forgiven much, she loved much. Because she truly experienced it, nothing, not even obvious death on a cursed cross, could shut it down inside her.

Where are the Mary Magdalenes of our time? Come on. Let’s us prove to the world once again that:

‘That which was from the beginning, which we have heard, which we have seen with our eyes, which we have looked upon, and our hands have handled, of the Word of life; (For the life was manifested, and we have seen it, and bear witness, and shew unto you that eternal life, which was with the Father, and was manifested unto us;) That which we have seen and heard declare we unto you, that ye also may have fellowship with us: and truly our fellowship is with the Father, and with his Son Jesus Christ. And these things write we unto you, that your joy may be full’. (1 John 1:1-4 KJV).

Jesus said: ‘And shall not God avenge his own elect, which cry day and night unto him, though he bear long with them? I tell you that he will avenge them speedily. Nevertheless when the Son of man cometh, shall he find faith on the earth?’ (Luke 18:7, 8 KJV)

We shall be like Job. We will hold fast our faith and even when all is thrashed around us, we will say ‘For I know that my redeemer liveth, and that he shall stand at the latter day upon the earth’: (Job 19:25 KJV).

My friend, don’t give up. Wake up! Stand by your dream! Till it is resurrected.

‘Jesus said unto her, I am the resurrection, and the life: he that believeth in me, though he were dead, yet shall he live: And whosoever liveth and believeth in me shall never die. Believest thou this? (John 11:25, 26 KJV)

Your vision, your dream shall Iive again.

‘But if the Spirit of him that raised up Jesus from the dead dwell in you, he that raised up Christ from the dead shall also quicken your mortal bodies by his Spirit that dwelleth in you’. (Romans 8:11 KJV).

ENOUGH SAID!!! - Articles by Selasie Bulmuo

Be not afraid of sudden fear, neither of the desolation of the wicked, when it cometh. For the Lord shall be thy confidence, and shall keep thy foot from being taken. (Proverbs 3:25, 26 KJV).

I love to see risk takers rewarded. It is a natural phenomenon. It even works with financial investments. Those who take the highest financial risks either make the highest losses or the highest gains. They are high rollers. They thrive on the danger of it all and are prepared to sacrifice all just for the thrill of the journey. In this modern day they can be called Adrenalin junkies.

An article by Elizabeth Scott M.S, published in About.com on the issue of Adrenaline Junkies states that the term ‘Adrenaline Junkie’ was popularly used in the 1991 movie Point Break in reference to people who favor dangerous activities for the adrenaline rush that accompanies them.

There are people hooked on the high that putting themselves under pressure provides. They thrive on it and tend to get much achieved.

There is a sense of achievement that one gets with the defiance of the odds when despite the presenting risks one ‘jumps’ anyway in the face of danger.

Faith in God to an unbeliever is like being asked to jump in the face of danger and uncertainty. There are some therefore who based on their experiences, their knowledge and human wisdom consider it foolish to make that jump.

But if you see only the danger and the ‘foolishness’ of the gospel and the ‘insanity’ of giving over your life to a God you cannot see, if you only see the ridiculous in the salvation story, which tells you to accept that this God sent his son Jesus to die in your place to pay the price for your sins, if you can’t see beyond this, you will be missing the other side of all these. The reward. The yield. The benefits. The promise.

How will you feel about making the jump if you are assured that you won’t loose? If you know for a fact that someone trustworthy and able has got your back?

Only a silly coward will refuse to jump when there is such assurance. God is trustworthy and able, he’s got your back.

‘Now thanks be unto God, which always causeth us to triumph in Christ, and maketh manifest the savour of his knowledge by us in every place’. (2 Corinthians 2:14 KJV).

An adrenalin junkie has the audacity to make a ‘jump’ by not looking only at the danger but more so at the reward or at least the promise of it.

Unlike the adrenalin junkie whose faith is in himself and his abilities to contain and handle the presenting danger, a life in God is based on a believe in God’s abilities and his promises to you. He wants you to come on a journey of discovery both of yourself and of him.

He says: ‘Call unto me, and I will answer thee, and shew thee great and mighty things, which thou knowest not’. (Jeremiah 33:3 KJV)

‘They that go down to the sea in ships, that do business in great waters; These see the works of the Lord, and his wonders in the deep’. (Psalm 107:23, 24 KJV).

Why should we believe his promises? We believe his promises because he is God and those promises are based on who he is and not on us or our abilities. All he requires is your faith, your trust in him. Some may call it ‘blind’ faith. But faith that wants to maintain all control and to have it all answered is no faith. That kind does not yield high rewards.

But without faith it is impossible to please him: for he that cometh to God must believe that he is, and that he is a rewarder of them that diligently seek him. (Hebrews 11:6 KJV)

‘For I know that the Lord is great, and that our Lord is above all gods. Whatsoever the Lord pleased, that did he in heaven, and in earth, in the seas, and all deep places. He causeth the vapours to ascend from the ends of the earth; he maketh lightnings for the rain; he bringeth the wind out of his treasuries’. (Psalm 135:5-7 KJV)

He is a mighty God indeed. And this is what this great God says concerning you:

‘For I know the thoughts that I think toward you, saith the Lord, thoughts of peace, and not of evil, to give you an expected end’. (Jeremiah 29:11 KJV).

‘Whereby are given unto us exceeding great and precious promises: that by these ye might be partakers of the divine nature, having escaped the corruption that is in the world through lust’. (2 Peter 1:4 KJV)

‘For the Lord’s portion is his people; Jacob is the lot of his inheritance. He found him in a desert land, and in the waste howling wilderness; he led him about, he instructed him, he kept him as the apple of his eye’. (Deuteronomy 32:9, 10 KJV).

Look what this great God said to Abram before he became Abraham; ‘After these things the word of the Lord came unto Abram in a vision, saying, “Fear not, Abram: I am thy shield, and thy exceeding great reward” ‘ (Genesis 15:1 KJV)

This is King David’s testimony concerning God;
‘For by thee (God) I have run through a troop; and by my God have I leaped over a wall. As for God, his way is perfect: the word of the Lord is tried: he is a buckler to all those that trust in him. For who is God save the Lord? or who is a rock save our God? It is God that girdeth me with strength, and maketh my way perfect. He maketh my feet like hinds’ feet, and setteth me upon my high places. He teacheth my hands to war, so that a bow of steel is broken by mine arms. Thou (God) hast also given me the shield of thy salvation: and thy right hand hath holden me up, and thy gentleness hath made me great. Thou hast enlarged my steps under me, that my feet did not slip. I have pursued mine enemies, and overtaken them: neither did I turn again till they were consumed. I have wounded them that they were not able to rise: they are fallen under my feet. For thou hast girded me with strength unto the battle: thou hast subdued under me those that rose up against me. Thou hast also given me the necks of mine enemies; that I might destroy them that hate me. (Psalm 18:29-40 KJV)

You see the prove of the pudding is in the eating. Just like it is difficult for the average person to understand why someone will jump off a cliff just for the thrill of it and keep going back again and again to repeat the experience, so it is difficult to understand the depths of the riches of the glory and the power of God reserved for those who choose, love and follow him.

The two situations do not even adequately compare because whereas one provides a temporary thrill the latter provides eternal benefits far beyond anything on this earth.

A true walk with God is not a safe, dull, uneventful one. God is the most interesting, enigmatic, fun person you have ever met. He sets ups tasks that look absolutely impossible and risky and assures weaklings like us that we can do them. He provides the equipment, and the power, the very enablement we need. He literally tells you ‘ I will keep you safe’ and then asks you to jump. If you trust and believe in him and do what he says, you experience his awesome power, you see and do the coolest things that by yourself you could never do. The best part is he is always right there with you and takes you deeper and deeper into a life you only dreamed about.

Like David you will be able to say, by my God, I have run through a troop – sounds like an impossible challenge doesn’t it? – running through a troop but he did it by his God.

Are you living life on the safe side? With no risks, being protective of yourself, your reputation, your well being etc? Are you struggling to survive as it is? Worried about tomorrow? Just making do with the little you’ve got?

The bible says:
‘In the fear of the Lord is strong confidence: and his children shall have a place of refuge’. (Proverbs 14:26 KJV)

God is inviting you to take a walk with him on the wild side. Take a jump of faith in him. Dare to live the life he is calling you to. He himself is your place of refuge. But you’ve got to want it bad, just like an adrenalin junkie. You have to have the drive, the intense desire, the kind that makes you ready to give everything up just for him.

‘But now thus saith the Lord that created thee, O Jacob, and he that formed thee, O Israel, Fear not: for I have redeemed thee, I have called thee by thy name; thou art mine’. (Isaiah 43:1 KJV)

You see, once you taste of such power, once you have such experiences with God, you become addicted. You are no longer satisfied with walking in the slow lane but you hunger after him like the psalmist below:

‘My soul thirsteth for God, for the living God: when shall I come and appear before God? Deep calleth unto deep at the noise of thy waterspouts: all thy waves and thy billows are gone over me. Yet the Lord will command his lovingkindness in the daytime, and in the night his song shall be with me, and my prayer unto the God of my life’. (Psalm 42:2, 7, 8 KJV).

There are two areas of profound uncertainty that produce fear in the human soul – these are the fear of the unknown and the fear of the present (circumstances).

You can conquer these fears if you approach them in God. You will be strong and you will do exploits. Your faith in him will be the vehicle and your hope in his promises and his ability to save will be your anchor as you journey though life not as a weak and fearful person but as someone who will take your mountains, your high places and ensure that the purpose for your life is achieved.

‘The eternal God is thy refuge, and underneath are the everlasting arms: and he shall thrust out the enemy from before thee; and shall say, Destroy them’.(Deuteronomy 33:27 KJV)

‘Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, which according to his abundant mercy hath begotten us again unto a lively hope by the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead, To an inheritance incorruptible, and undefiled, and that fadeth not away, reserved in heaven for you, Who are kept by the power of God through faith unto salvation ready to be revealed in the last time’. (1 Peter 1:3-5 KJV).

Is the Law of Liberty Lawless?

James 2:18

In some developing countries like Ghana, there continues to be a strong sense of small scale entrepreneurialism. Everything is a business even if it is being done for free. There are hand held, bicycle borne, head carried, table top businesses by the road sides usually with slogans scribbled near by which are supposedly business names. These slogans almost always have a reference to God. For example ‘God dey we dey’, ‘ I am a winner’, ‘God is good’, etc.

Apart from the roadside selling to car drivers passing by, some also move from house to house or congregate at lorry stations or busy junctions.  It is an open secret however that these businesses are not regulated and have never been. There are no business policies or procedures in place, no clearly defined laws or limits as far as they are concerned. Attempts to regulate them or to get taxes in any form is met with a lot of cultural resistance. These ventures and the way they are run is simply a way of life.

Somehow they never grow to the level at which they will be forced to be registered and to comply with the laws of the state and to have policies and procedures in place.

A life without God is like running such a business. You live in a ‘free market’  without spiritual ethics or rules to abide by. You peddle your wares anywhere and anyway you can to survive. You therefore never grow to the level of accountability or increasing productivity where your life benefits not only yourself but others too.

The kingdom of God has a growth agenda, a reward / yield agenda which is based on our exercise of faith in God. If you are going to exersise faith in God as far as your life is concerned, you will have to aim to hand over control to him and please him and abide by his commands. ‘But without faith it is impossible to please him: for he that cometh to God must believe that he is, and that he is a rewarder of them that diligently seek him’. (Hebrews 11:6 KJV).

Everyone wants to become great, to be rewarded for their diligence. Some attempt to demonstrate their faith by diligently obeying the laws – mainly the 10 commandments of God. These commandments end up becoming a harassment to them. They find that they cannot comply, and like is done to the small business in Ghana, the law/ commandments chase them from one junction to another, and in their attempt to survive they try to find ways around God’s law / commandments, places to hide. It becomes a daily game of cat and mouse between them and God. They comfort themselves with the thought that at least they are better than some as they don’t commit the ‘big sins’ like, “thou shall not kill”,and “thou shall not commit adultery”.

But this is what the bible says; ‘If ye fulfil the royal law according to the scripture, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself, ye do well: For whosoever shall keep the whole law, and yet offend in one point, he is guilty of all’.(James 2:8, 10 KJV). So any attempt to keep the law requires that you keep all of it every single one. This is no mean feat.  The law then becomes a spotlight showing you your level of deviation. The law itself has no power to help you to live by it. You therefore find that you are not free to demonstrate your faith in God through how well you keep the commandments / law. The law instead of helping you grow has become an impediment showing you all your shortfalls.

But faith in God can be demonstrated not only by strict adherence to the law but by Grace. Grace is a free gift of God, where God by his power and his Spirit, enables you to live a life that is pleasing unto him. ‘For if ye live after the flesh, ye shall die: but if ye through the Spirit do mortify the deeds of the body, ye shall live. For as many as are led by the Spirit of God, they are the sons of God’. (Romans 8:13, 14 KJV) ‘But as many as received him, to them gave he power to become the sons of God, even to them that believe on his name’.(John 1:12 KJV). ‘For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God’. (Ephesians 2:8 KJV).

Grace then, is the undeserved favour of God where he enables you to do what you could not do by yourself. You are now able to do it because you have become a son. You have the spiritual capital you need to fulfil even more than the law without being conscious that you are doing so. This is freedom indeed. It is the Law of Liberty at work.

Just like the small scale business that gets injected with a big capital can now acquire property, be registered, advertise and pay taxes and has no need to operate by the road side and run away from the police or the metropolitan authorities, you become free too. Just as the business does not even need to be reminded of the law because it now has the structure and the ability  to automatically abide by it so you are able also by the grace of God to automatically abide by the law / commandments of God. That’s what salvation by grace does for you as a person.

You no longer need to play hide and seek with God. His grace enables you to automatically live the life that demonstrates your faith in him. You live by the law of liberty. And that is what you are judged by.

Grace does not exempt you from judgement. It does not remove all the limits. It just gives you a greater capacity to achieve.  If God is so kind as to give you this free gift, it is imperative that you do not abuse this free gift. The law of liberty is not lawless.

God will still judge.  ‘So speak ye, and so do, as they that shall be judged by the law of liberty’. (James 2:12 KJV). In this modern days though, people use the grace of God to substantiate their wrong dealings as if to say they live above God’s law and are not subject to judgement. We oppress the poor, and take the little they have from them. We do not plead the cause of the fatherless or the widow. Above all we contravene the royal command.

Someone asked Jesus a question; ‘Master, which is the great commandment in the law? Jesus said unto him, Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind. This is the first and great commandment. And the second is like unto it, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself. On these two commandments hang all the law and the prophets. (Matthew 22:36-40 KJV).

These two commands are the summary of all the laws and also the prophets. The prophets all prophesied about an era of grace which is what we enjoy now. What this scripture is saying therefore is that, these two commandments sum up both the law and grace. No one is exempt from them.

‘We then,…….. beseech you also that ye receive not the grace of God in vain’.(2 Corinthians 6:1 KJV).  You cannot say you have faith in God and are living by Grace and just live anyhow. Your faith must be substantiated by what you do. ‘What doth it profit, my brethren, though a man say he hath faith, and have not works? can faith save him?’ (James 2:14 KJV) ‘Yea, a man may say, Thou hast faith, and I have works: shew me thy faith without thy works, and I will shew thee my faith by my works. For as the body without the spirit is dead, so faith without works is dead also’. (James 2:18, 26 KJV).

Let the law and the grace that you live by evidence your faith in God and let the  fruits of such a life as you live bear witness of your faith. Show the world that you are free indeed and that the Law of Liberty in which in walk is not Lawless.

God knows. God understands. Is that your excuse?

 Luke 8:25

Have you heard this question before? If God is all knowing why do we have to pray?

This reasoning is used by some to excuse their lackadaisical attitude towards things of faith. Some even use it to explain their bad actions and attitudes stating that God can see their heart and God knows their good intentions and God understands their inability to take certain action as appropriate.

Faith should however be an enabler and an impetus to spur us on to take action as appropriate to the circumstances that confront us. Faith in God should not disable us, it should enable us. Because you believe in God you take action against injustice, action against sin, action against anything that dehumanises, torments and harasses you as well as others.

It is faith that makes us speak up for others knowing that is what God expects of us and knowing that we have the victory because God is for us. Faith which is not demonstrated is dead and does not overcome challenges.

So instead of remaining in your comfort zone or feeling unable to take action or to make any effort to change your adverse circumstances, it is important that you get up to your feet and do what God expects you to do as a believer. Take action! Pray! Speak the word! Put your hands to the plough and do not look back!

The bible tells us the following:

‘For whatsoever is born of God overcometh the world: and this is the victory that overcometh the world, even our faith’. (1 John 5:4 KJV)

‘But without faith it is impossible to please him: for he that cometh to God must believe that he is, and that he is a rewarder of them that diligently seek him’. (Hebrews 11:6 KJV)

In Luke 8:25, Jesus rebuked his disciples because they refused to exercise their faith in the face of a storm and instead were expecting that he will wake up and calm the storm on their behalf. Infact they asked him, ” don’t you care that we perish? Implying that he should know that they were unable to do anything about the raging storm themselves. And he should know that they expected him to do it for them. But this is Jesus’s response “Where is your faith? And they being afraid wondered, saying one to another, What manner of man is this! for he commandeth even the winds and water, and they obey him” (Luke 8:25 KJV)

Yes, with faith, even the winds and the water will obey you. But you must get up, face the storm and speak the word to the storm.

We must always exercise our faith. It is the only way to show our true colours as children of God, as overcomers in this world. Come on. Let’s make God proud and pleased with us. Lets exercise our faith today.

To Keep faith alive a bit longer

For Tomorrow

Will bring you to an expected end

A symbol of the future

But just a simple word

Intangible, Uncertain, Only Probable

Will Tomorrow

Be worth living for today

A thought to hang on to

A dream yet unfulfilled

A Vision to run with

‘Cos Tomorrow

Is a treasure still unveiled

Intangible, yet substantial

Uncertain, yet full of Promise

Only Probable, yet worth waiting for

For Tomorrow

Is faith beyond today.

There’s hope for tomorrow.
